Keys to the Game
Key sequence Cornell had led most of the way, and enjoyed a 49-41 lead just over halfway through the middle of the second half, but Colgate reeled off nine unanswered points to take a one-point lead on a Tim Pounds layup with 6:58 to play. Louis Dale put the Big Red back in front with a layup at the other end, Kyle Roemer hit a three-pointer to give the Raiders back the lead. After Ryan Wittman tied things up with a jumper, Roemer struck again from long range. Collin Robinson couldn’t convert from close range, and Roemer added two free throws to give Colgate a 58-53 lead with 4:27 remaining.
Key sign it was over Robinson rebounded his own miss and found Adam Gore for a three-pointer to cut Cornell’s deficit to four points with 44 seconds left. Daniel Waddy hit two free throws, and Gore missed a three, then Roemer added a pair at the line to make it 72-64 with just 22 seconds on the clock. Wittman’s three-pointer made it a five-point game, then after a Waddy free throw, Dale brought the Big Red within a single possession with a three pointer. Waddy was fouled with six seconds left, and this time he hit both free throws. When Wittman turned it over and Tim Pounds drew a foul with just two seconds remaining, the game essentially was over.
Key performance Roemer had a number of big buckets on his way to a game-high 18 points. The Colgate guard also added six rebounds, an assist, and a steal in 27 minutes, while playing solid defense.
Key statistic There was no home cooking from the officals, as Cornell was whistled for 24 fouls, compared to 14 for Colgate. The result was a dramatic 30-4 free throw attempt differential, as the guests had a 23-2 edge in points at the line.
