Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
After 6-8 forward Rob Ferguson hit his third three-pointer of the second half to tie the game at 44 with 1:32 to play, Mark Zoller rebounded his own miss jumper, but was called for a traveling violation after a foul was not called on Saint Joe’s. The Hawks’ Abdulai Jalloh then hit the game-winning jumper — his only field goal of the game — over David Whitehurst with 25 seconds left. |
Key sign it was over |
With Penn trailing by three with 6.9 seconds left, Ibby Jaaber inexplicably stepped inside the three-point line to launch a desperation shot. It was partially blocked and the clock ran out. |
Key performance |
St. Joseph’s forward Rob Ferguson. After scoring four points in the first half, the sophomore dropped 10 points in the first three minutes after intermission. Ferguson cooled down after Fran Dunphy switched Steve Danley off him, but then hit the tying three-pointer from the top of the key in the final minutes. |
Key statistic |
Penn’s 3-for-19 three-point shooting. Despite a number of wide-open looks, Penn shot 15.8 percent from the arc and only took six shots from three-point range in the second half. |

Eric Osmundson, 11-for-23 from three-point range over the last three games, went 0-for-6. He’s hit 29 of his 92 three-point attempts on the year. The latter is a team high. |

Penn’s 44 points matches its lowest output from last season, a 77-44 loss at Wisconsin on Nov. 20, 2004. The last time the Quakers scored lower than 44 was a 44-40 loss at Temple in 2000. |

The first St. Joe’s rollout congratulated Penn coach Fran Dunphy on his 300th win, which he got at La Salle on Wednesday. Penn’s three best rollouts: 1. “Hey Hawk: I’d try to fly away, too, if I went to St. Joe’s.†2. “Our mascot works for free.†3. “2004: NCAA. 2005: NIT. 2006: Watching the new “Law & Order.†|
