Keys to the Game
Key sequence Nick Holmes’s jumper tied things up at 64 all with 2:35 remaining, but Mark Porter connected from outside the three-point arc at the other end. Two Matt Kyle free throws brought the Bulldogs back within one, and Ross Morin came up with a steal and was fouled, hitting both free throws to put his team in front. However, Jamal Smith’s bucket gave the lead back to Wagner with 1:14 on the clock.
Key sign it was over Down by one, Yale ran the shot clock down inside of five seconds before Kyle misfired on a baseline hook. The Seahawks grabbed the defensive board and milked the clock before committing an offensive foul with 10 ticks left. The Bulldogs had a chance to win, but Porter took the ball away from Eric Flato and drove in for a layup with two seconds on the clock. Travis Pinick’s halfcourt prayer at the buzzer went unanswered, and Yale dropped its fifth straight game in very tough fashion.
Key performance Durrell Vinson finished with a game-high 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting, and added eight rebounds in 28 minutes for Wagner.
Key statistic After both teams shot an even 50.0 percent in the first half, their fortunes diverged after halftime. Wagner connected on an impressive 15 of 25 attempts (60.0 percent), while Yale went very cold, hitting just 8 of 23 (34.8 percent) in the final 20 minutes.
Notes

– Five Bulldogs scored in double figures on the afternoon, led by Morin’s 14 points. Flato had an uncharacteristically poor performance, shooting just 1 of 7 from the field and committing five turnovers.

– James Ulrich and Porter each scored 15 for Wagner.

– The Bulldogs caught a break when the Seahawks struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 8 of 15 attempts from the stripe (53.3 percent), compared to 16 of 19 (84.2 percent) for the home team.

– Wagner had great success inside, shooting 24 of 40 (60.0 percent) inside the arc, and outscoring Yale 38-24 in the paint.

– Kyle did not start due to illness, but came off the bench for 21 minutes, scoring 10 points. Sophomore Paul Nelson got the start in the middle in his place, but failed to score in 15 minutes of playing time

– Yale will try to halt its skid when it goes back on the road on Tuesday, December 4, albeit with a very short trek down I-95 to Fairfield for 7:00 pm ET tipoff.
