Keys to the Game
Key sequence Things started well for Princeton with a Zach Finley layup on the Tigers’ first possession, but Duke responded with 12 unanswered points, with 10 of those coming from freshman Kyle Singler. Matt Sargeant stopped the bleeding with a layup at the 15:35 mark to make it 12-4, but those would be the final points for Princeton over the next five minutes, as the Blue Devils forced turnovers and missed shots, while exploding for a 19-0 run. Trailing 31-4 just before the midway point of the first half, Princeton eventually got untracked offensively, but by then it was much too late.
Key sign it was over The Tigers were showing some fight, hovering around 25 down when Duke scored seven points in under 90 seconds, capped off by a Taylor King three-pointer that gave the Blue Devils a 73-43 cushion. At that point the final 10 minutes were a mere formality.
Key performance Singler had a very big night for Duke with 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting, and added 12 boards — including nine on the offensive end — in just 27 minutes on the floor. The freshman scored 13 of those points during the Blue Devils’ back-breaking 31-4 opening run.
Key statistic Duke completely decimated Princeton on the boards. The Blue Devils grabbed 20 of the 43 rebounds at their offensive end (46.5 percent), while limiting the Tigers to just 3 of 27 (11.1 percent) at their end. The second-chance scoring reflected this lopsided rebounding, with Duke shutting out Princeon 21-0 in that department.
Notes

– Lincoln Gunn didn’t appear to be rattled by the Duke pressure, scoring a team-best 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

– The game was played at Duke’s tempo, with 72 possessions per side.

– Princeton committed 21 turnovers, to just 11 for Duke. Unsurprisingly, points off turnovers was 25-11 in the Blue Devils’ favor.

– The Tigers attempted just 14 three-pointers for the game.

– Freshman Bobby Foley and sophomore Nick Lake made their collegiate debuts, while Jason Briggs saw the court for the first time in two years.

– Princeton will face Arizona State, which lost its opener to Illinois, in a game that will be televised live on ESPNU at 4:00 pm ET on Tuesday, November 20.
