Keys to the Game
Key sequence Brown came out and committed turnovers on its first four possessions, while Michigan scored on its first five, putting the Bears in an early double-digit hole. The Wolverines’ head start proved insurmountable, as Brown battled the hosts relatively evenly after those first five minutes, but could get no closer than 13 points in the second half.
Key sign it was over Damon Huffman’s three-pointer cut the Michigan lead to 65-52 with 3:51 left in the contest, and Brown had a chance to draw closer, but DeShawn Simms blocked Mark McAndrew’s shot, and Manny Harris added two free throws for the Wolverines. Morgan Kelly’s layup made it a 13-point game again, only to see Kelvin Grant answer with a pair of free throws. This time, Huffman couldn’t connect from long range, and Harris pushed the margin to 16 with a free throw at the 1:55 mark. Michigan then made Brown work for a shot, and by the time Colin Aldridge hit a three-pointer, only 81 ticks remained on the clock. A dunk by Sims would be the final scoring on the afternoon.
Key performance Harris was the high point man with 22 points, hitting 6 of 8 from the floor and 7 of 9 at the line. The Michigan guard also dished out four assists.
Key statistic The Bears have excelled at getting to the free throw line under Craig Robinson, but they attempted just two free throws on the day — compared to 19 for Michigan, who outscored Brown 12-1 from the stripe.
