Keys to the Game
Key sequence Mike Strittmatter’s bucket pulled Princeton to within 17-15 at the 7:19 mark of the first half, but Ibby Jaaber answered almost immediately by knifing through the Tiger defense for a layup. After a media timeout, Jaaber swiped the ball from Strittmatter and took it the other way for a dunk. Lincoln Gunn was Jaaber’s next victim on the following Princeton possession, leading to a fastbreak layup by Brian Grandieri. Jaaber then blocked a Marcus Schroeder layup attempt, and after an exchange of turnovers, the 2005-06 Ivy Player of the Year found Darren Smith for a layup that extended the Quaker lead to double digits at 25-15.
Key sign it was over After a three-pointer by Gunn opened the second-half scoring with 20 seconds gone and cut Penn’s lead to eight points, the Quakers mounted a 22-8 run over the next 8:12 to make it a 50-28 lead with 11:28 left. Following layups on their first four possessions after halftime and two Mark Zoller free throws, Grandieri hit two more back-to-back lay-ins. The run concluded with six straight made free throws from Zoller, Jaaber, and Justin Reilly.
Key performance Zoller led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting — all from two-point range — and made 5 of 7 free throws to go with seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
Key statistic Penn scored on an incredible 13 of its first 14 possessions in the second half.
