Keys to the Game
Key sequence After a Luke Owings’s three-pointer from straight away gave Princeton its first lead of the night, 41-40, with 6:17 remaining, the teams traded turnovers. On Dartmouth’s next possession, Leon Pattman drove down the paint, twisted under a couple of defenders and tossed in one of his trademark dipsy-doo layups to give the lead back to Dartmouth for good. Alex Barnett then blocked a Michael Strittmatter layup, and the Big Green got three attempts at the other end before settling for a single John Ball foul shot. A Princeton miss, a Dartmouth miss, and a Tiger turnover returned the ball to the Big Green, which got a Pattman jumper at the left foul line extended for a 45-41 lead. After yet another Princeton miss, it was Pattman hitting one of two free throws and Barnett getting the rebound. Fouled, he hit one of two shots to cap a 7-0 run that turned a 41-40 deficit into a 47-41 lead with 91 seconds left.
Key sign it was over After Lincoln Gunn’s steal on the floor and subsequent lay-in pulled Princeton to within 47-43 with 1:10 remaining, Dartmouth ran the shot clock perilously deep before Ball hit a turnaround fadeaway to make it 49-43 with 35 seconds to go. Kyle Koncz tried to cut into the lead with a three-pointer but Barnett went high for his fourth block of the game, and was fouled, hitting both free throws for an eight-point lead with 22 seconds to play.
Key performance John Ball had 14 points and 10 rebounds, with six coming on the offensive end. Although he’s struggled at times this year from the foul line, he was 6-for-8 from the line and played his usual tough defense.
Key statistic Dartmouth dominated on the boards, grabbing 11 of 30 (36.7 percent) rebounds at their offensive end, while holding Princeton to 6 of 24 (25.0 percent) offensively. The Big Green had 16 second-chance points, compared to just two for the Tigers.
Notes

– Pattman tied Ball for team high-scoring honors with 14 points.

– Owings had 15 points and seven rebounds in 18 active minutes off the bench to lead Princeton in scoring.

– The Big Green was 11 of 16 at the free throw line, while the Tigers attempted only seven free throws, hitting three. It was the lowest free throw attempt total by a Dartmouth opponent this season.

– Dartmouth was 2-for-10 outside the arc — making it 2 of 17 combined in the two games with Princeton — but still swept the season series for the first time since the 1945-46 season.

– Princeton attempted only six three-pointers — easily the lowest single-game total in the Joe Scott Era.

– Even without a point from DeVon Mosley, Dartmouth’s starters outscored Princeton’s starters, 42-17.

– Noah Savage, battling a fever, did not play for Princeton. Pawel Buczak, who had played just two minutes all season, got on the floor for eight. The freshman hit one of two shots, a left-handed hook midway through the first half.

– Princeton looks for a season sweep of its own when the Tigers visit Harvard (10-15, 3-8 Ivy) on Saturday, February 24 at 7:00 pm ET, while Dartmouth welcomes Ivy leader Penn (18-8, 9-1 Ivy) to Leede Arena.
