February 11 Power Rankings

We’re still looking at a three-team race after exciting finish in Ithaca, except this week the preseason favorites are back on top of the standings. Making sense of the bottom half was an incredibly tough task, thanks to a pair of nailbiters in Princeton and a combined 0-4 record against the first division.

1. Penn (14-8, 5-1 Ivy) 2 The Quakers weren’t at the top of their game this weekend, but still managed to win twice by comfortable margins, largely due to Dartmouth’s passes to spectators and Harvard’s poor shooting. Mark Zoller bounced back with two big games, but Brian Grandieri and Ibby Jaaber are scuffling.
2. Cornell (13-9, 6-2 Ivy) 3 The difference for the Big Red between 6-2 and 4-4 turned out to be an airballed three-pointer at the buzzer and two missed free throws with two seconds left. With a huge game at Penn looming next weekend, Cornell needs Ryan Wittman to put his three-game slump behind him.
3. Yale (10-11, 6-2 Ivy) 1 Yale’s five-game winning streak ended Saturday, when the Bulldogs rallied from 15 down, only to come up just short at Cornell. You have to feel for Casey Hughes, whose two missed free throws in the final seconds were so painful, they were excised completely from Yale’s game recap.
4. Columbia (13-9, 4-4 Ivy) 4 The Lions saved some face with a comfortable win over Brown, but any hope for title contention went down the tubes thanks to an awful final 10 minutes against Yale on Friday. Now it’s all about finishing strong and preparing for next season, when expectations will be even higher.
5. Dartmouth (8-13, 3-5 Ivy) 7 It wasn’t pretty, but thanks to Alex Barnett’s big game, the Big Green did manage to split the Penn-Princeton road trip without the services of Leon Pattman. We’ll find out if Pattman’s return next weekend can spark a Dartmouth offense that has been struggling as of late.
6. Brown (7-16, 2-6 Ivy) 6 Mark McAndrew continues to impress, but Friday brought another narrow loss for the Bears — their third so far in Ivy League play. After playing 17 of its first 23 games away from home, Brown returns home with a chance to grab some league wins against Harvard and Dartmouth.
7. Harvard (10-12, 3-5 Ivy) 5 Harvard found another agonizing way to lose to Princeton when the excellent free throw shooting Crimson went 4 of 10 at the line down the stretch in regulation and in the first overtime. Despite a surprisingly decent effort 21 hours later, the P road trip ended in a sweep yet again.
Princeton (10-10, 1-5 Ivy) 8 The relief from Friday’s win was short-lived, as Kyle Koncz was on crutches the next night to watch Princeton lose at home to a Dartmouth team minus its best player. It would be shocking to see the Tigers start 1-5 in the league if they hadn’t done so once already under Joe Scott.
