Keys to the Game
Key sequence Dartmouth had been trying in vain to catch Princeton throughout the second half until Robby Pride found Alex Barnett for a layup to knot the game at 40 with 3:26 left. Jason Meyer came up with a steal and Mike Strittmatter fouled John Ball, who hit one of two at the line to give the Big Green its first lead of the half. Following a Lincoln Gunn turnover, Pride had a layup roll off the rim, but Ball put back the offensive rebound for a three-point Dartmouth lead with just 78 seconds on the clock.
Key sign it was over Strittmatter drove in from the top of the key to bring Princeton to within one with 54 seconds left. Jason Meyer took a jumper with the shot clock winding down. It missed, but the ball went out of bounds off the Tigers. Princeton was forced to foul with 19.6 seconds remaining, and DeVon Mosley drained both free throws. After a 30-second timeout, Noah Savage’s three-pointer from the top of the key missed everything. Justin Conway’s putback wouldn’t fall, and by the time Luke Owings followed his miss, only one second remained. Dartmouth inbounded the ball successfully and the final buzzer sounded.
Key performance Barnett scored more than half of his team’s points, finishing with a game-high 23. The sophomore missed both of his three-point attempts, but was 10 of 13 inside the arc, largely on the strength of a large number midrange jumpers.
Key statistic Princeton sabotaged its chances of winning at the free throw line, converting just 10 of 21 attempts. There was plenty of blame to go around, as seven Tigers missed free throws on the night.
Notes

– Savage got the start and was the top scorer for the Tigers with 12 points in 26 minutes.

– Take away Barnett’s performance, and no Dartmouth player scored more than five points. The rest of the Big Green combined to score just 22 points on 8 of 24 shooting.

– Kyle Koncz was on crutches and joined Edwin Buffmire in street clotches on the Princeton bench, while Dartmouth was without leading scorer Leon Pattman for the second straight game, due to a stomach virus.

– Against an extended Dartmouth man-to-man defense, Princeton attempted a season-low 12 three-pointers, hitting just four. The Big Green missed all seven attempts from beyond the arc.

– The night after playing 50 minutes, Gunn finished with just two points and three turnovers, and Conway tallied just four points.

– Dartmouth uncharacteristically had its way on the glass, rebounding at 34.8 percent offensively and holding Princeton to 17.9 percent.

– The Big Green shot 11 of 17 (64.7 percent) in the first half, but trailed by three at halftime because of 10 turnovers.

– Dartmouth heads to Yale (10-11, 6-2 Ivy) on Friday, February 16 at 7:00 pm ET, while Princeton heads to Philadelphia to take on arch rival Penn (14-8, 5-1 Ivy) on Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00 pm ET.
