Keys to the Game
Key sequence After a patented Leon Pattman spin and layup drew Dartmouth within 52-51 at 1:41 of the second half, John Baumann came open in the left corner and drained a three-pointer with 6-8 Dan Biber charging out at him, to make it 55-51. A driving layup by DeVon Mosley — his only basket in eight attempts — made it a two-point game and when Columbia couldn’t find an opening as the shot clock wound down, Dartmouth seemed on the verge of having a chance at tying or taking the lead. But somehow Brett Loscalzo came free on the left diagonal and knocked down a three-point dagger to make it 58-53 with 29.5 seconds remaining.
Key sign it was over After a John Ball putback of a Biber miss made it 58-55 with 17.9 seconds left, Dartmouth called time and fouled Mack Montgomery on the subsequent inbounds play. The 85-percent free throw shooter drained both shots with 15.7 seconds to play for a five-point lead. When Mosley’s three at the other end bounced meekly off the front rim, it was all over but the final free throw by Baumann.
Key performance Baumann was the only Lion in double figures, throwing in 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and hit 3 of 4 from the foul line. One night after being held to a season-low two rebounds against Harvard, he recorded a season-high 14 boards, including three off the offensive glass.
Key statistic Columbia was able to win despite being outshot 42.3 percent to 35.6 percent and committing more than twice as many turnovers (12) as Dartmouth (5), because the Big Green once again couldn’t keep its hands off its opponents, racking up 25 personal fouls. The Lions attempted 27 free throws to just 11 for Dartmouth, and outscored the hosts 23-6 at the stripe.
Notes

– Pattman poured in 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting and recorded four assists against zero turnovers in a losing cause, while Alex Barnett contributed 15 points and four blocks.

– Columbia dominated on the boards, grabbing more offensive rebounds (16) than Dartmouth had defensive boards (15) for 51.6-percent offensive rebounding. The Lions held the Big Green to just 18.8-percent rebounding at their offensive end.

– Columbia swept an Ivy road weekend for the first time since turning the trick on this same road trip against Harvard and Dartmouth in 2003-04.

– After shooting just 6 of 26 (23.1 percent) from the field and 1 of 5 (20.0 percent) from behind the arc in the first half, Columbia hit went 10 of 19 (52.6 percent) from the floor and 5 of 8 (62.5 percent) from long range in the second half.

– Dartmouth recorded seven blocks, while Columbia failed to record one.

– Dartmouth has a tough task awaiting it, travling down to Penn (12-8, 3-1 Ivy), while Columbia hosts Ivy leader Yale (9-10, 5-1 Ivy) on Friday, February 9 at 7:00 pm ET.
