Keys to the Game
Key sequence With what had been a nine-point lead was down to 44-40 after a Leon Pattman basket with 15:13 remaining, Cornell responded with a triple by Louis Dale and a bucket in the paint by Dale to match its biggest lead of the game to that juncture, 49-40. After the Big Green got a basket by Alex Barnett and another from Pattman to draw within 49-45, Cornell responded with a Graham Dow layup, a 3-pointer by Ryan Wittman, and a Geoff Reeves layup off an Andrew Naeve steal to make it 56-44 with exactly 10 minutes remaining. Dartmouth never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Key sign it was over With Dartmouth down 10 points and bidding to cut the difference to single digits with 4:30 remaining, Johnathan Ball turned the ball over and Louis Dale hit a jumper in the paint. A Ugo Ihekweazu basket in the paint and foul shot stretched the Cornell lead to 15 inside of the final three minutes.
Key performance In addition to Ihekeazu’s 12 points (on 4-for-4 shooting from the field and 4 of 5 from the line) Alex Tyler came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points in 19 minutes, going 8-for-9 from the line. Tyler had 13 points in just 12 minutes in the first half to help the Red to a 32-25 lead at intermission.
Key statistic Ball, Pattman, Marlon Sanders, and Jason Meyer had four fouls apiece for Dartmouth, helping Cornell go to the line 27 times to the Big Green’s 12. The Big Red outscored Dartmouth 20-9 from the line.
Notes

– Pattman was the game’s leading scorer with 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, adding four assists, three rebounds, and two steals for Dartmouth.

– Ryan Wittman had 14 points on efficient 4-for-6 shooting from three to tie Tyler for team high-scoring honors.

– Dale had an off night shooting the ball, going just 3 of 12 from the field. However, the freshmen grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists, without committing at turnover in 34 minutes.

– The turnover count was similar — 14 for Cornell, 15 for Dartmouth — but the Big Green’s miscues were far more costly, leading to a 20-8 edge in points off turnovers for the Big Red.

– The rebounding numbers also were similar, with Dartmouth grabbing 11 of 35 offensive boards (31.4 percent) while holding Cornell to 8 of 26 (30.8 percent). However, the Big Green held a 14-7 edge in second-chance points.

– There weren’t a lot of three-pointers, but Cornell was far more effective from long range, knocking down 6 of 12 (50.0 percent), compared to just 2 of 10 (20.0 percent) for Dartmouth.

– The Big Red heads down to Boston for a date with Harvard (9-10, 2-3 Ivy), while the Big Green welcomes Columbia (11-8, 2-3 Ivy) to Hanover on Saturday, February 3 at 7:00 pm ET.
