Keys to the Game
Key sequence A John Baumann layup gave Columbia a 48-41 lead with 4:36 left. Andrew Naeve missed four straight free throws, but Louis Dale tracked down the rebound and drilled a three-pointer in the corner to cut the Big Red deficit to four at the 3:36 mark. The Lions had two chances to extend their lead, but Kevin Bulger and Baumann both missed jumpers and Columbia committed a foul on the second rebound. Wittman hit both free throws, before Ben Nwachukwu and Dale each hit one of two to make it a two-point game. Following a Nwachukwu turnover, Naeve equalized with a pair of free throws with 1:36 remaining. Baumann had his shot blocked and lost the ball out of bounds, and Alex Tyler missed a free throw line jumper, but Dale tipped out the rebound and Ryan Wittman drilled a 24-foot three-pointer from the top of the key to put Cornell up 52-49 with 46.4 seconds on the clock.
Key sign it was over Trailing by three, Bulger missed a jumper and Wittman sailed in to take the rebound away from two Lions. Dale was fouled in the backcourt with 24.7 seconds left, and the freshman drilled both free throws for a five-point lead. Brett Loscalzo missed a three, but Baumann put back his miss and Columbia fouled Dale, who hit one of two at the stripe with 13.1 ticks on the clock. A long Loscalzo two-pointer rimmed out, and Naeve grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 4.3 seconds left and his team leading by four.
Key performance Wittman had a very rough first half, finishing with three turnovers and just four points on 1-for-5 shooting and missing all four three-point attempts. He missed his first shot attempt of the second half, but came to life over the final 12:02. Wittman hit his final three three-pointers and a pair of free throws, while grabbing two important defensive rebounds, leading the Big Red’s comeback.
Key statistic Columbia’s offense struggled for the third straight game, as the Lions shot just 17 of 50 (34.0 percent) on the afternoon. Comparatively, Cornell’s 17-for-39 shooting (43.6 percent) looked downright efficient.
