Keys to the Game
Key sequence After leading by as many as 13 in the first half, Harvard fouled Eric Flato attempting a long three-pointer with 2.7 seconds left in the first half. Flato only hit one of three at the line, and Drew Housman appeared to draw contact on an attempted halfcourt heave just before the buzzer, but the officials didn’t give the Crimson the call. With his team headed to the locker room up just 40-37, Frank Sullivan drew a technical foul for protesting the call. Flato opened the second half by sinking the two technical free throws to pull Yale within one, then Caleb Holmes hit a jumper in the lane eight seconds into the half to put the Bulldogs in the lead. Following a Harvard turnover, Matt Kyle followed up a miss with a putback to finish off a 7-0 run in less than a minute that gave Yale a 43-40 advantage.
Key sign it was over A long Brian Cusworth two-pointer brought Harvard to within 64-61 with 6:12 remaining. Yale turned the ball over and Drew Housman drove in for a fastbreak layup, but couldn’t get it to fall. Caleb Holmes sandwiched a pair of 2-for-2 performances at the line around a Housman turnover. Jim Goffredo drew the Crimson back to within five with a jumper, but Caleb Holmes scored his sixth straight point on a layup at the other end. A Jeremy Lin turnover turned into a breakaway dunk for Casey Hughes, and when Housman gave the ball back to Yale, Ross Morin hit two free throws to cap off a 10-2 Bulldog run that made it a 74-63 game. Yale would hit its free throws down the stretch and Harvard would get no closer than seven.
Key performance Caleb Holmes set a new career high with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 night at the line. Holmes also added six rebounds, and assist, a block, and two steals in 25 minutes.
Key statistic After hitting only 10 of its first 24 free throw attempts, Yale went 19-for-19 at the line down the stretch. By the end of the night, an abysmal performance from the line had turned into an acceptable, 67.4-percent one.
Notes

– Cusworth had a monster game for Harvard with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Playing in his penultimate game in a Harvard uniform, the senior big man shot 12 of 18 from the floor.

– Hughes has a very efficient game for Yale with 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting.

– Despite Cusworth’s big night, the Bulldogs actually outscored the Crimson 46-40 in the paint.

– Harvard had five offensive rebounds in the first 2:44, but only grabbed six the rest of the way, finishing at 36.7 percent offensive rebounding. Despite some serious foul trouble by its big men, Yale managed to grab 10 of 27 rebounds (37.0 percent) at its ends.

– A second technical foul was called on the Harvard bench after a non-call on an attempted layup by Housman with the Crimson trailing by four. Flato hit one of the two resulting free throws.

– The win moves James Jones’s career record against Harvard to 12-3 and gives Yale a four-game winning streak in the series.

– Yale travels up to Dartmouth (7-9, 2-1 Ivy), while Harvard hosts Brown (6-12, 1-2 Ivy) on Saturday, January 27, at 7:00 pm ET.
