Keys to the Game
Key sequence After Brown trimmed a nine-point Dartmouth lead to 46-45 with an 8-0 run capped by a pair of Mark McAndrew free throws with 4:28 left, Big Green co-captain John Ball drove the paint and fed Alex Barnett with a wraparound pass for a layup. McAndrew answered for Brown with a pair of free throws to again make it a one-point game. Back at the other end, Leon Pattman nailed a jumper just inside the arc, Brown’s Chris Skrelja was called for a charge, and Dan Biber put back a Ball miss to give Dartmouth a five-point lead. Brown closed to 54-52 on McAndrew’s triple with 55.8 seconds left, but could get no closer.
Key sign it was over After Mark McDonald blocked Barnett’s bunny on the left side with 25 seconds left to keep it 54-52, the Bears had the ball and a chance to tie or win the game on the final possession. But after a timeout, Dartmouth’s DeVon Mosley got the back of his hand on a short pass in front of the Brown bench and deflected the ball off a visitor’s shoulder and out of bounds with 10 seconds remaining. With no choice but to foul after Dartmouth got the ball inbounds, the Bears hacked Mosley in the back court and the sophomore calmly swished two free throws for a four-point lead with nine seconds left.
Key performance Ball had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Dartmouth. He led both teams with eight rebounds, including three on the offensive end and added a pair of assists without a turnover.
Key statistic Dartmouth’s 33.3-percent offensive rebounding might look relatively pedestrian, but compared to the 20.0 percent Brown managed, it looked downright impressive. The Big Green also did a much better job of taking advantage of those second chances, outscoring the Bears 10-0 in second-chance points.
Notes

– McAndrew led all scorers with 25 points for Brown, largely on the strength of a perfect 12-for-12 night at the free throw line. He was the only Bear in double figures.

– Barnett’s 16 points was the team-high for Dartmouth, but the sophomore shot just 5 of 13 (38.4 percent) from the field.

– Brown was 22-for-25 (88.0 percent) as a team from the free throw line. Dartmouth didn’t get to the line as frequently as the Bears but also was on the mark with 11-for-12 (91.7 percent) shooting.

– The Bears lost the turnover battle 18-13, and the Big Green outscored them 14-8 in points off turnovers.

– The Big Green got a boost late in the first half from center Kurt Graeber, who had four points and four rebounds in 13 minutes.

– Dartmouth’s seventh victory enabled the Big Green to top last year’s victory total with 11 games remaining. At 2-1, Dartmouth is over .500 in the Ivy League for the first time in Terry Dunn’s three years at the helm.

– After losing eight consecutive games in the series, Dartmouth now has won two straight.

– Brown travels down to Harvard (8-9, 1-2 Ivy), while Dartmouth hosts Yale (6-10, 2-1 Ivy) on Saturday, January 27 at 7:00 pm ET.
