Keys to the Game
Key sequence Cornell opened the game by scoring 17 of the first 20 points to set the tone for the contest. Andrew Naeve scored on three of Big Red’s first four possessions, then Ryan Wittman and Conor Mullen drilled back-to-back three-pointers, before Sean Burton gave Ithaca its first points with a three that made it 12-3. Wittman then added a conventional three-point play and Jason Battle put back an offensive rebound to put Cornell up 17-3 just 5:10 into the game.
Key sign it was over The Big Red probably could chalk up the win at halftime when it was up 43-19, but a 10-1 run to start the second eliminated any doubts and earned some playing time for guys closer to the end of the bench. Graham Dow finished off the spurt with a layup and three-point play on consecutive possessions to push the margin to 53-20. The Bombers would get no closer than 27 the rest of the way.
Key performance Ithaca College had no one inside to match up against Naeve, who finished with eight points, 13 rebounds, four blocks, and a steal in just 18 minutes.
Key statistic The Big Red clamped down defensively on its Division III city rival, holding the Bombers to 14 of 55 (25.5 percent) shooting on the evening.
Notes

– Burton was the only Bomber in double figures with 10 points.

– As would be expected, Cornell is undefeated all-time in five meetings with Ithaca College.

– The big lead allowed Steve Donahue to give some serious minutes to his reserves, with 13 players seeing action and all of them getting seven or more minutes of playing time.

– Louis Dale did a great job running the offense, handing out eight assists against just one turnover.

– Cornell will look to finish up its non-league schedule with a win when struggling Division I newcomer NJIT (2-12) pays a visit to Newman Arena on Sunday, January 7, at 7:00 pm ET.
