Keys to the Game
Key sequence Brown used torrid shooting and some defensive stops to build up a big first-half lead. The Bears led by four when Damon Huffman hit a three-pointer at the 12:36 mark, then after a Marcus Becker steal, Mark McAndrew followed suit with a three for a double-digit lead. Matt Mullery blocked a jumper, then McAndrew struck again from long range. Following a Hartford miss, Mullery scored in the paint, then McAndrew grabbed a defensive rebound and scored on a transition layup. Bo Taylor ended a string of 13 unanswered points for Brown with a jumpshot just past the midpoint of the half, but Sam Manhanga followed up his own miss and hit two at the line for the Bears’ first free throws of the game. After the two teams traded turnovers, Steve Gruber struck from three-point range to give Brown a 33-13 lead.
Key sign it was over Hartford got within single digits when a Jaret von Rosenberg three made it a 48-39 game five minutes into the second half. But Brown would respond with 14 points on its next five possessions to quickly open up a 21-point lead. During this run, Hartford’s Michael Turner was assessed a technical foul. Huffman hit the two technical free throws and Scott Friske drilled a three for a five-point possession. Leading by 17 with under 10 minutes left, the Bears would use an 8-0 run to turn the game into a blowout at 72-47 at the 7:28 mark.
Key performance McAndrew scored a career-high 30 points, doing most of his damage with 6-of-10 shooting (60.0 percent) from beyond the arc and perfect 10-for-10 free throw shooting. The junior guard also added five rebounds and six assists in 39 minutes of action.
Key statistic Brown had a number of eye-popping numbers on its stat sheet on the afternoon, but the story of the game was the Bears’ 16-for-28 shooting (57.1 percent) from three-point range. Brown knocked down 10 first-half treys while building its substantial lead. Over half of the Bears’ offensive output — 48 out of 95 points — came on three-pointers.
