Keys to the Game
Key sequence Devon Mosley had put Dartmouth up three early in the second half with a layup, but things fell apart for the Big Green. Over the next five minutes, Dartmouth would commit four turnovers and miss five layups. Meanwhile, the Catamounts scored on five straight possessions for eleven unanswered points. It wasn’t until Elgin Fitzgerald hit two free throws with 12:34 remaining that the Big Green ended its scoring drought at nearly six minutes, and at that point the Vermont lead had grown to eight.
Key sign it was over Two Michael Giovacchini free throws brought Dartmouth to within 61-54 with 6:58 left, and the Big Green had a chance to cut into the lead further. But Jason Meyer and Giovacchini mised three-pointers on the next possession, and Mike Trimboli got a conventional three-point play to push the lead back to double digits. Despite some very poor free throw shooting by the Catamounts, Dartmouth could manage only three points at the line on its next eight possessions, as Vermont expanded its lead to 72-57 with under two minutes left.
Key performance Freshman Joe Trapani had a big game for Vermont with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting, to go with six rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes.
Key statistic The Catamounts grabbed 16 offensive rebounds (43.2 percent), while the Big Green managed only eight (25.8 percent). Therefore, it was no surprise that Vermont owned a 17-7 edge in second-chance points.
Notes

– Mosley was Dartmouth’s leading scorer with 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-5 from outside the arc. The guard also contributed seven rebounds — all on defense..

– The Big Green shot exceptionally well in the first half (15 of 25 — 60.0 percent), but that figure dropped off dramatically in he second half (28.0 percent).

– Leon Pattman had his first truly subpar game since returning from injury, scoring 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting. Pattman missed all four three-point attempts on the night, but did involve his teammates, recording five assists.

– The Catamounts owned a 28-17 edge in free throw attempts, but due to Vermont’s terrible 13-for-28 (42.9 percent) free throw shooting, Dartmouth actually outscored its hosts 14-13 at the line.

– John Ball started for the Big Green and recorded three assists, but logged just five minutes.

– Dartmouth will look to start a new winning streak when it returns to action on Saturday, December 30 at UMES (1-7) at 5:00 pm ET.
