Keys to the Game
Key sequence Brown trailed by 10 points with under 80 seconds remaining when Marcus Becker assisted Damon Huffman on a layup to make it 70-62. The Bears forced a turnover, then Huffman stuck a three-pointer with 51 ticks on the clock to make it a five-point game. Will Daniels hit one of two at the line for Rhode Island, but a Mark McAndrew three with 35 seconds left made it a one-possession game. Brown got the turnover it needed when McAndrew came up with a steal at the other end. With the clock inside of ten seconds, Chris Skrelja attempted a potential game-tying three-pointer, but it wouldn’t fall and the Rams controlled the rebound.
Key sign it was over After Skrelja’s miss, Daniels hit the first free throw to make it a 72-68 game. He would miss the second, but Brown was down two possession at that point with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Key performance The game featured explosive, career-best offensive performances by a guard on each team, but with the win, the nod goes to Jimmy Baron of URI. The coach’s son lit it up from three-point range, hitting 8 of 9 from deep en route to 28 points. Baron also added two assists, two steals, and a rebound in 35 minutes without a single turnover.
Key statistic Led by Baron, the Rams were unconscious from three, hitting 12 of 18 (66.7 percent) three-point attempts on the night. Brown did very well for itself with 14 three-pointers, but required a more conventional 32 attempts to get to that figure.
Notes

– Damon Huffman had a huge night in his second game back from a knee injury, leading all scorers with 30 points. Huffman shot 8 of 11 from the arc and added four rebounds, an assist, three steals, and no turnovers in 31 minutes off the bench.

– McAndrew and Skrelja were the other Bears in double figures, but the pair combined to shoot only 7 of 26 (26.9 percent) from the field.

– After attempting 60 free throws in its previous game, Brown came back to earth with only 13 attempts from the line, while Rhode Island took 23 free throws.

– With a win, the Bears would have owned basketball bragging rights in the Ocean State with their first mythical Rhode Island state championship since the 2001-02 season.

– Largely due to Huffman’s 30 points, the Brown bench outscored Rhode Island’s 40-7.

– Craig Robinson saw his team draw first blood with a basket on its first possession of the night for the fourth straight game when Scott Friske hit a three-pointer 45 seconds in.

– Up next for Brown is a challenging road test on Saturday, December 9, at Albany (2-3) — one of the better mid-majors in the Northeast.
