Key sequence Columbia ended the first half with a 10-3 run to lead 27-19 at intermission. Then the Lions were able to build up a double-digit lead when Wagner missed its first five shots of the second half. A Matt Vitale free throw was the only Seahawk scoring in the first 3:43 after halftime, while Columbia connected on four of its first five shots to finish off a 19-4 run bridging halftime to claim a 35-20 advantage.
Key sign it was over Leading 44-29, the Lions held the Seahawks to two points over a 5:34 span. A K.J. Matsui layup capped a 12-2 Columbia run that gave the Lions a commanding 56-31 lead with less than six minutes left in the contest.
Key performance Ben Nwachukwu was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting. The junior center added six rebounds and two blocks in just 24 minutes.
Key statistic The two teams attempted the same number of field goals (51), but Columbia connected on 28, compared to only 18 for Wagner. The Lions shot 54.9 percent as team, while Wagner could manage only 35.3-percent shooting.
Notes

– No Wagner player reached double figures in scoring. Joey Mundweiler was the leading scorer for the Seahawks with nine points.

– Niko Scott sat out due to an ankle injury that has him day-to-day. Matsui started in his place and joined Nwachukwu as the game’s only double-figure scorers.

– Freshman Patrick Foley didn’t shoot well (2 of 6, 0 of 2 from three) but did a great job getting his teammates involved with five assists against just one turnover.

– The Wagner starting five combined to score just 24 points on 9-for-37 (24.3 percent) shooting.

– Joe Bova played a career-high 17 minutes off the bench, scoring a career-best six points.

– Columbia will head west to Easton, PA, on Monday, December 11 to face Lafayette (3-6) in a 7:00 pm ET game.
