Keys to the Game
Key sequence Brown found itself down 56-51 with under 10 minutes left in the game after DeMario Anderson dunked on consecutive possessions. Sam Manhanga hit a three-pointer, Chris Wehye answered with one of his own, then Damon Huffman connected from deep to cut the margin to two. After the two teams traded layups, Marcus better tied the game with a pair of free throws, and Brown went on top with two Mark McAndrew points at the line. The Bobcats equalized on a layup on their next possession, but Chris Skrelja put the Bears back on top with two free throws, then added a three-pointer with 5:12 remaining for a 68-63 lead.
Key sign it was over A Wehye lay-in shaved the Brown lead to three with 1:15 left, but the Bears held off the Bobcats at the line, going 7-for-8 on free throws on their next four possessions. By the time Steve Gruber missed a pair of free throws with 10 ticks left, Quinnpiac needed a miracle. The chance for that passed when Adam Gonzalez misfired on a three-pointer.
Key performance McAndrew had a poor shooting night from the floor (1 for 5 from three, 1 for 7 overall) but got the job done at the line, where he hit 15 of 16 (93.8 percent). The junior guard tied for high scoring honors with 18 points, and improbably collected 14 rebounds for a double-double.
Key statistic Brown attempted 60 free throws, making 47 (78.3 percent). This means 58.8 percent of the Bears’ scoring on the night came at the stripe.
Notes

– Gonzalez led the way for Quinnipiac with 18 points.

– The game was Brown’s first without leading scorer Keenan Jeppesen, who left the program earlier in the week. The news was announced on the radio broadcast.

– Chris Skrelja and Damon Huffman both made their returns from injuries. Skrelja enjoyed an impressive season debut, scoring 14 points and grabbing five rebounds in 19 minutes. Huffman finished the evening with nine points, three rebounds, and three assists in 24 minutes in his first game back after suffering a knee injury in the season opener at Michigan State on November 8.

– Three Bobcats fouled out, and three more finished with four personal fouls. Sam Manhanga was the only Bear to be disqualified, fouling out in just 12 minutes. 60 total fouls were called on the night, resulting in a combined 88 free throws.

– Because of Brown’s 60 free throws and 22 turnovers, the Bears attempted only 34 field goals — nearly half of Quinnipiac’s total of 67.

– The Bears’ 41 second-half points were more than they scored in 40 minutes at Michigan State and Northwestern.

– Having already beaten Providence, Brown will look to make it a sweep of its in-state rivals when it travels to Kingston to face Rhode Island on Tuesday, December 5 at 7:00 pm ET.
