Keys to the Game
Key sequence Columbia was on its heels after Sacred Heart got a three-pointer, a dunk, and a layup and foul in 71 seconds to take a 42-38 lead early in the second half. But the Lions used the three-point line regain momentum, with Justin Armstrong and Niko Scott combining to hit four trifectas on Columbia’s next five possessions. A Scott jumper capped off a 14-3 Lion run that gave the Light Blue a 52-45 advantage with under 14 minutes remaining.
Key sign it was over Leading 74-70, Mack Montgomery grabbed his own rebound with 1:16 remaining and had a chance to run more time off the clock. But Sacred Heart’s Jarrid Frye came up with a big steal, and Montgomery made the situation worse by fouling Frye, who made it a one-possession game with 1 of 2 at the line. The Pioneers got the stop they needed when Scott couldn’t connect on a jumper with 24 ticks left, but Frye was called for a charge while driving to the hoop. Patrick Foley was fouled intentionally, but the freshman missed the front end of the one-and-one, giving Sacred Heart a chance to tie. However, Foley atoned for his missed free throw by coming up with a steal at the other end with just four seconds left. The Pioneers fouled Brett Loscalzo, who hit two free throws to put the game out of reach.
Key performance Scott tied for team high-scoring honors with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. The freshman got the Lion offense untracked with a pair of early three-pointers and fueled the important second-half run.
Key statistic Columbia shot an impressive 12 of 21 from the arc, and it needed all of those three-pointers in the end. Seven different Lions connected from long range on the afternoon, including Joe Bova, who hit his first collegiate triple.
