Key sequence The Lions stayed with the 12-ranked Blue Devils early on, and trailed 20-14 over nine minutes into the contest. However, a Ben Nwachukwu tip-in gave Columbia its only points during a six-minute stretch, during which Duke went on a 12-2 run to open up a 16-point advantage.
Key sign it was over Leading by 22 at halftime, Duke came out and scored the first nine points of the second half. Just over three minutes into the second stanza, the hosts held a commanding 31-point lead, and the rout was on.
Key performance Duke freshman Brian Zoubek made quite a first impression on the home crowd, scoring a game-high 18 points in just 14 minutes. The 7-2 center did most of his damage at the line, where he was 10 of 13. Zoubek also grabbed six boards.
Key statistic Duke’s 28-15 edge in field goals. The Blue Devils outshot the Lions 58.3 percent to 29.4 percent.
Notes

– John Baumann led Columbia in scoring with 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting. No other Lion scored more than eight points.

– Duke’s interior size intimidated the smaller Lions down low. The Blue Devils recorded 11 blocks on the night.

– Columbia registered just seven assists against 19 turnovers.

– Duke shot 16 of 22 (72.7 percent) from the floor in the first half.

– Six Lions made their collegiate debuts in the hostile environment of Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sophomore Joe Bova, who missed all of last season with a back injury, saw his first action in a Columbia uniform. Freshman Niko Scott looked good, showing off a nice lefty stroke as he nailed a pair of three-pointers to finish with eight points. Patrick Foley and Kevin Bulger also both scored their first college points.

– Columbia faces UC Davis in the consolation game of the Durham Regional of the CBE Classic on Monday.
