Keys to the Game
Key sequence Brown had two chances in the final five minutes to cut into a five-point Michigan State lead. However, Sam Mahanga was whistled for a traveling violation in the lane on the first possession, and Mark McAndrew missed the front end of a one-and-one the second time. Travis Walton stuck a jumper at the other end to restore the Spartan lead to seven with 3:28 remaining, and the Bears would get no closer.
Key sign it was over Trailing by seven with 1:43 left, Brown allowed Michigan State to run the clock down to 1:09 before giving up an offensive rebound. By the time Marcus Becker fouled, only 57 seconds remained. Goran Suton hit both free throws to increase the margin to nine.
Key performance Michigan State sophomore Maurice Joseph came off the bench for Tom Izzo to score all his career- and game-high 12 points in the first half.
Key statistic 20-4. That was Michigan State’s advantage in free throw attempts. Fouls were relatively even (18 for Brown, 14 for the Spartans), but the Bears new offense attacked the basket much less than the hosts.
Notes
Playing in front of friends and family from Petoskey, MI, Bears guard Damon Huffman was enjoying a good first half until he went down at the 1:17 mark with what appeared to be a knee injury. Huffman later returned to the bench in civilianattire during the second half.
Brown sophomore Chris Skrelja did not dress.
The Bears won the turnover battle, 18-8. Brown outscored Michigan State 16-6 in points off turnovers.
In a promising sign for a team running the Princeton offense, the Bears registered assists on 12 of their 13 field goals.
No Brown player scored in double digits. McAndrew led the way with eight points.
The Bears shot a frigid 13 of 44 as a team, for 29.5 percent team shooting.
