Things got interesting this week, as two teams that had run up impressive records against iffy schedules both had rough weeks, while the two bottom teams each picked up a much-needed win on Saturday.

1. | Penn (3-3) | 1 | That 13-point loss at Duke is looking pretty solid right about now after seeing what Duke did to #2 Texas. The game against Villanova on Tuesday should give us a better idea just how much of that was Penn, and how much was a good opponent having a bad night. |
2. | Columbia (6-2) | 3 | The Lions ended a two-game losing streak with yet another close win over a not-so-great opponent (Lafayette) on Saturday. The schedule is about to get much tougher after the exam break, with back-to-back road games at Big East teams. |
3. | Harvard (5-3) | 2 | Harvard has hit a speed bump since that 5-0 start, with three straight losses. The biggest problem has been an injury to its biggest player, as Brian Cusworth fractured his hand going after a loose ball in the first half of the Central Connecticut game. |
4. | Cornell (3-5) | 5 | The Big Red moves up this week without playing a game. When Cornell does return to action after exams it does so under very difficult circumstances with a road game in Lewisburg against a 5-1 Bucknell team that has already won at Syracuse and DePaul. |
5. | Yale (3-4) | 4 | The impressive performance in the Nebraska tournament to open the season is becoming a distant memory, as Yale has dropped three of four since then. The home loss to Wagner wasn’t terrible, but losing by 16 at Hartford was. |
6. | Princeton (2-4) | 7 | The Tigers were able to carry over their inspired play from the second half of the Temple game into Saturday’s game against Wyoming. Princeton got off to a fast start and led by as much as 17 points early the second half against its Mountain West opponent. |
7. | Brown (2-5) | 8 | Brown broke out of its offensive slump with a nice win at Binghamton on Saturday. Entering the game averaging just 54.2 points and shooting 36.2 percent as a team, the Bears put up 71 points and connected on 48.1 percent of their shots. |
8. | Dartmouth (1-2) | 6 | It seems unfair to drop the Big Green into the eighth spot while it’s not playing, but someone had to earn that honor and the two teams below Dartmouth both won. Besides, that double-overtime loss at Colgate the last time out still smarts. |
