Yale coach James Jones picked up his second commitment this week when Raffi Mantilla of Mundelein High School in Mundelein, IL, announced his decision to attend Yale. According to ChicagoHoops.com, Mantilla visited New Haven this past weekend and immediately committed to the Bulldogs, canceling visits to Brown and Princeton. The 6-3 shooting guard also had garnered interest from Dartmouth. Mantilla hails from the same suburban Chicago high school that produced former Harvard big man Graham Beatty, though Mundelein is coming off a very rough 6-22 campaign last season.
Slant: Ranking first in his high school class academically and with a near-perfect ACT score, the initial reaction might be to dismiss Mantilla as simply an Academic Index boost. But a source who has seen him play insists that isn’t the case. On the heels of Porter Braswell’s commitment, Jones finds himself with a pair of complementary guards already at this early stage of the recruiting calendar.
