Dave Telep of Scout.com reports that Glen Miller picked up his first commitment at Penn this week when Harrison Gaines of Serrano High School in Phelan, CA, committed to the Quakers. After garnering scouting interest from Pac-10 schools Stanford, Washington, and USC back in the winter and spring, the senior point guard decided on Penn over interest from Mountain West, WAC and Big West programs.
The commitment is a major coup for the new Penn staff, which has aimed noticeably higher with its recruiting efforts. The program has been looking for its next standout point guard ever since Michael Jordan graduated in 2000, making due with combo guards like Andy Toole and Eric Osmundson. Those who have seen Gaines play draw comparisons to former Miller standout Jason Forte, though Gaines is reported to have a better jumpshot and a considerably less volatile personality than the 2003-04 Ivy League Player of the Year.
