The offseason saw quite a bit of turnover on coaching staffs around the league. As a matter of fact, every Ivy school except Princeton begins 2006-07 with one or more new faces in the program. Here’s a rundown of the changes.
The first big coaching story of the offseason happened early on, when Fran Dunphy left Penn after 17 seasons to succeed John Chaney at Temple. Following an eventful search for a replacement, Penn looked inside the league and hired Glen Miller away from Brown. Miller brought assistant (and former player) Mike Martin with him to University City and lured former Brown assistant Chris Sparks from Central Connecticut State as his top assistant. He filled out the staff and gave it some Penn flavor by bringing on board former Penn great Perry Bromwell as the third assistant.
Meanwhile, back in Providence the search was on for Miller’s successor. On June 15, Brown named former Princeton great Craig Robinson — previously an assistant under Bill Carmody at Northwestern — the new head coach. Robinson hired Jesse Agel, a former longtime Vermont assistant under Tom Brennan, as his top assistant. In late summer former Brown player Doug Stewart joined the program as an assistant after two seasons as the head coach at Casper College in Wyoming.
At Columbia, Joe Jones brought in Damien Strahorn from Colby to replace the departed Joe Conefry as his volunteer assistant. Ron Ginyard, Jr. came aboard as director of basketball operations following four years at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, VA.
Cornell lost its top assistant when Izzi Metz left to take over at Hobart. Steve Donahue responded by promoting his two remaining assistants and bringing in former Wisconsin standout Mark Vershaw from Washington State as his third assistant.
After years as the only three-man staff in the Ivy League, Harvard has a third assistant this season. Jay Johnson joins the program as a volunteer assistant following three seasons assisting at his alma mater, Colby.
In April, Jim McCarthy left his assistant’s job at Yale to work for Bill Coen at Northeastern. James Jones promoted Matt Kingsley to the vacant full-time position and has brought in Mark Sembrowich, a former assistant at Army, as the volunteer assistant to complete the staff.
Last but not least, Dartmouth added a director of basketball operations with the hire of Ashley Ackerley.
