Sources: Brown coaching hire expected soon

Multiple sources familiar with the Brown head coaching search have said a decision is imminent, with an announcement expected in the next 24 to 48 hours. The position has been vacant since April 26, when Glen Miller accepted the Penn job. Princeton grad and current Northwestern assistant Craig Robinson and Williams coach Dave Paulsen are the two names attracting the most attention, but a former Ivy League head coach with New England ties is a dark horse candidate as well.

Slant: On the surface this seems like an extremely long period to carry out a search, but there was a surprisingly high amount of interest in the position. With an unexpectedly large number of applicants for the search committee to evaluate, the hiring process was bound to require some time. And considering that Temple took nearly as long to hire the guy expected to get that job all along, this really isn’t that extreme.

Robinson is an impressive candidate, quickly establishing a strong reputation as a talented coach and strong recruiter after returning to college basketball six years ago as an assistant with Bill Carmody at Northwestern. However, unless he’s looking at running a different system than what he played at Princeton and coaches at Northwestern, Robinson might not be the best fit, as the Princeton approach — even in its modified forms — has not fared well elsewhere in the Ivy League.

Paulsen is a very highly regarded head coach with an excellent track record in a comparable high academic setting at Williams. There is some doubt as to whether he would actually leave his alma mater for Brown, but the fact he is still a candidate seems to imply he would take the job if offered.

Finally, while there’s nothing wrong with hiring an Ivy retread like former Celtics assistant Paul Cormier, his experience in the league came in a different, weaker era. Cormier has been out of college basketball for nearly a decade, and his combined record of 173-206 in 14 seasons at Dartmouth and Fairfield doesn’t exactly impress.
