Georgia SG Matthews commits to Columbia

Columbia coach Joe Jones added a fifth member to his recruiting Class of 2006, securing a commitment from Wesley Matthews, a 6-3 shooting guard out of South Cobb High School in Georgia. Matthews was reported to be involved with Harvard after scholarship offers failed to materialize this spring, but Columbia got involved late. There’s an Ivy League connection, as Matthews played his AAU ball with the Atlanta Celtics team founded by the late Wallace Prather Jr., father of former Cornell player Wallace Prather III .

Slant: Matthews gives Jones three players at the shooting guard position in the class, along with a fourth backcourt player in point guard Patrick Foley. It’s a bit odd Jones would go for another shooting guard recruit, but he must have been surprised to find that Matthews still was available this late in the recruiting process. With Matthews’s good GPA and test scores, Jones was able to make the Academic Index numbers work.
