February 26 Power Rankings

After Penn and Princeton swept this weekend, the top two and bottom two spots are pretty obvious. But with everyone going 1-1 in the Empire State, the competition for the middle spots was incredibly fierce. Here are the penultimate Power Rankings, with the disclaimer that Brown, Columbia, and Cornell could have been put in pretty much any order.

1. Penn (18-7, 10-1 Ivy) 1 These weren’t dominating performances like the previous five home games, but Penn gutted out two crucial wins shorthanded against game Harvard and Dartmouth squads. Now the Quakers find themselves just two wins away from an NCAA Tournament bid.
2. Princeton (10-14, 8-3 Ivy) 2 You can’t say enough about the job the coaches and players have done turning around the season. After another gutty rally late in Friday’s Dartmouth game, Princeton came out the next night against Harvard and played possibly its best game in the Joe Scott Era.
3. Yale (15-12, 7-5 Ivy) 3 The Bulldogs cost themselves with the Friday loss at Cornell that resulted in their elimination when Penn won the following night. Yale did save some face with the Saturday win at Columbia, rallying from a halftime deficit for its second Ivy road win of the season.
4. Cornell (11-15, 6-6 Ivy) 5 The weekend and home schedule ended on a sour note with a Senior Night loss to a Brown team Cornell had already beaten in Providence. Still, the win the previous night over Yale was impressive, and the Big Red still can match last year’s 8-6 Ivy mark.
5. Columbia (11-14, 4-8 Ivy) 4 Things appeared to be falling into place nicely after Friday’s easy win over Brown, but a poor second half doomed the Lions against Yale the next evening. Still, a sweep of the Dartmouth-Harvard roadtrip would give Columbia some momentum heading into next season.
6. Brown (9-16, 5-7 Ivy) 7 It feels wrong putting the Bears down here after the win at Cornell, but given the poor performance at Columbia the previous night, Brown ends up sixth this week. Saturday’s win gave Glen Miller five Ivy wins, matching last season’s league total with Jason Forte.
7. Dartmouth (5-20, 3-9 Ivy) 6 The Big Green let one get away on Friday night, blowing a late six-point lead and losing to Princeton again at the buzzer. The next night Dartmouth played Penn closer than the final score suggests, getting nice offensive games from a couple of freshmen.
8. Harvard (12-13, 4-8 Ivy) 8 Harvard showed some fight for the first time in four games in Friday night’s overtime loss at Penn. Perhaps it was fatigue from the long and hard-fought game the previous night, but the Crimson got steamrolled by 27 at Princeton for its seventh straight loss.
