Keys to the Game
Key sequence Ben Nwachukwu tied the game at 54 with just over eight minutes left, but Yale’s Dominick Martin untied it with a free throw just 12 seconds later. Martin then blocked Nwachukwu’s jumper and hit one of his own at the other end. The Lions’ next five possessions produced a turnover, three missed three-pointers, and a pair of missed jumpers. Meanwhile, Ross Morin and Sam Kaplan added jumpshots to push Yale’s margin to seven.
Key sign it was over Justin Armstrong rebounded a missed three-pointer and fed John Baumann for a layup to draw Columbia to within three with under three minutes left. But with the shot clock running down, Martin answered with a short jumper. Eric Flato stole the ball from Kashif Sweet, but missed a jumper with the shot clock again running low. Kaplan fouled Baumann, who hit one of two free throws to make it a four-point game with 1:04 left. However, after a timeout Kaplan fed Martin for a layup and foul that the senior converted for a conventional three-point play. Casey Hughes blocked Armstong’s jumper and Flato hit two free throws to give Yale an insurmountable 68-59 lead with just 40 seconds left.
Key performance Flato and Martin had the big scoring games for Yale, but Morin’s 10-point, eight-rebound, 16-minute performance was the x factor. The freshman hit all four shots and registered an assist and a block without committing a turnover.
Key statistic Columbia missed all 11 three-point attempts in the second half. The Lions put up 40 first-half points, due in large part to their 6-of-8 shooting from three-point range in the first 20 minutes. But the Light Blue went ice cold from distance after halftime, scoring just 25 points in the second stanza.
Notes
Flato led all scorers with 22 points, while Martin added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Baumann led the Lions with 16, and Mack Montgomery scored a season-high 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Joe Jones started John-Michael Grzan, Dalen Cuff, and Dragutin Kravic on Senior Night, meaning Baumann, Armstrong, and Mack Montgomery all came off the bench for the Lions. As a result, Columbia’s 39-13 edge in bench scoring was rather misleading.
The Lions attempted two fewer free throws than the Bulldogs, but made four more. Yale shot just 60.0 percent from the stripe, while Columbia was far better at 82.6 percent.
Both teams played at a very fast pace, with 72 possessions for each team.
It was a back-and-forth game, with seven lead changes and eight ties.
With the win, James Jones improved his record against his brother to 5-1 in three seasons.
