Highly regarded SoCal guard Gaines commits to Penn

Dave Telep of Scout.com reports that Glen Miller picked up his first commitment at Penn this week when Harrison Gaines of Serrano High School in Phelan, CA, committed to the Quakers. After garnering scouting interest from Pac-10 schools Stanford, Washington, and USC back in the winter and spring, the senior point guard decided on Penn over interest from Mountain West, WAC and Big West programs.

Kach’s comeback hits a snag

Penn guard Mike Kach will be sidelined for most or all of preseason practice with a stress fracture, according to a source close to the situation. The junior is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday, October 6, with the average recovery from the injury ranging from four to six weeks. Kach had rejoined the basketball program this fall after leaving the team in December 2004, just six games into his collegiate career. The Carmel, NY, native is expected to play major minutes this season — possibly as a starter in the Quaker backcourt.

Fall orientation: part one

The college basketball offseason is always rife with change, but this summer felt like a particularly tumultuous one in the Ivy League.
