Great to see it confirmed that Gunter is still coming to Penn. Dau has also confirmed his commitment as did Steve. Would be great to see Miles Cartwright and Casey James confirm and even better if Kevin Panzer came back into the fold for Penn…

Has Howard or anyone else seen Gunter play lately? Just looking at his numbers, his team’s success and the local paper coverage it sounds like he could be an immediate contributor. And if that’s the case then we’re going to have a deep and talented interior next year.

A number of people, including me, have seen Gunter play and opinions are very split. Some think he’ll be able to help next year, especially with rebounding and shot-blocking. Others think he’s a year away. One of the reasons it’s difficult to project is that he’s often the focus of the other team’s defense so he does not get a lot of touches in the offense and Ridley plays at a slow tempo (look at their scores). Gunter is more advanced than Garvin Hunt, and seems to enjoy playing more. He’s more advanced offensively than Cam Lewis and perhaps a little taller. He has a decent release in his shot and has some range on his jumper. He shows flashes of good moves in the post and is not a bad passer out of the post. He runs and jumps well. The big question will be how he responds to the pace of the college game (he may actually thrive in a faster tempo) and the physicality of playing against guys bigger and stronger than he is. But there’s no question he has a high upside if he works hard.
