Keys to the Game
Key sequence Harvard was staying close midway through the first half, trailing just 17-13 until Adam Gore’s three-pointer at the 9:58 mark. The Crimson then went cold, and Cornell went ahead by nine on Jason Hartford’s basket a minute later. Following a series of scoreless possessions at both ends, Ryan Wittman’s jumper made it 24-13. Brad Unger answered with a three-pointer, but it would be the only Harvard scoring during a nearly eight-minute stretch. At the other end, Jeff Foote’s layup restored the double-digit lead, and after Unger misfired from three, Gore struck again from the outside. Two missed chances inside for the Crimson were followed by a Foote layup that made it 31-16 with 5:13 on the clock, and the Big Red was off to the races.
Key sign it was over Cornell used a 15-2 run bridging halftime to blow open the game. Louis Dale’s shot at the 18:37 mark made it 52-22, and the large Newman Arena crowd was putting on it dancing shoes.
Key performance Foote was a force down low for Cornell, finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks in just 17 minutes.
Key statistic The Big Red dominated in a number of statistical categories, but it was the 46-18 edge in the paint that stood out the most.
