Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
Just like in the first meeting, Dartmouth was hanging tough late in the first half, down just 28-27 with under a minute before halftime. However, Ryan Wittman’s layup and Louis Dale’s putback at the buzzer sent Cornell into the locker room with a 32-27 advantage, and the Big Red picked up right where it left off after intermission. Dale got the scoring started with a three-pointer 28 seconds into the second half, then Wittman got out on the break for a layup and a double-digit lead at 37-27, forcing Terry Dunn into a quick timeout at the 18:55 mark.

Key sign it was over |
It was still a 41-34 contest with under 16 minutes to play, but Cornell would put away the game with a a big 21-3 run. The run started with inside buckets by Alex Tyler and Dale, then back-to-back dunks by Jeff Foote. Then Dale took over from the outside, nailing a pair of three-pointers. DeVon Mosley’s three was the only Dartmouth scoring during this stretch, and the Big Red got going again with a Wittman layup, a Foote three-point play, and a Wittman jumper at the 9:27 mark that made it 62-37, allowing Cornell fans to celebrate the imminent share of the Ivy title over the remainder of the game.

Notes
– Alex Barnett had a very rough shooting night for Dartmouth (3 of 14), so it was Elgin Fitzgerald leading the way with 15 points, while Mosley added 11.
– Joining Dale in double figures for Cornell were Wittman (14 points) and Foote (11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench).
– The Big Red owned the glass, rebounding at 40.0 percent offensively while limiting the Big Green to 17.1 percent and enjoying a 13-2 edge in second-chance points.
– The win leaves Cornell just one shy of the single-season program’s all-time high of 20 set by the 20-5 1950-51 squad, and ties the school mark for Ivy League victories with 11.
– Dartmouth will look for a weekend split on Saturday, March 1 at Columbia as Cornell looks to remain perfect in the league when Harvard visits Newman Arena, with both contests tipping off at 7:00 pm ET.
