Keys to the Game
Key sequence Noah Savage’s three-pointer had given Princeton a 53-46 lead with 4:53 to play in regulation, but Matt Mullery drew a foul and hit both free throws at the other end of the court. Kyle Koncz took a three-pointer of his own, but it wouldn’t go down, and Mullery capitalized on his steam’s second chance with a layup to make it a one-possession game. Following another Koncz miss, Peter Sullivan made it a one-point game with a pair of free throws. After a wild sequence where the Bears committed consecutive turnovers and the Tigers had a turnover and a missed front end of a one-and-one by Marcus Schroeder, Savage stretched Princeton’s lead back to two with a free throw. Mark McAndrew misfired on a three-pointer, and Savage again could get just one of two at the stripe, allowing Sullivan to tie the game at 55-55 with a three-pointer with 44 seconds remaining. Jason Briggs was fouled while battling for position on the shot, and hit one of two free throws to give the Tigers back the lead, but Damon Huffman’s layup put the visitors in front with 20 ticks on the clock. Savage connected on a clutch three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to give Princeton a 59-57 advantage, only to see Huffman draw a foul and equalize with free throws with four seconds to play. Kevin Steurer had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his runner was off the mark and the game went to an extra session.
Key sign it was over With his team trailing by two, Savage scored his 35th and final points on a jumper with 1:05 left in overtime, tying the game at 63 apiece. Steuerer fouled Adrian Williams on his way to the hoop, and the freshman coolly drained both free throws to give Brown a two-point advantage. Savage couldn’t knock down an eighth three-pointer, but it wouldn’t fall, and the Tigers fouled Huffman with just 17 seconds remaining. However, the senior shockingly missed both free throws, leaving the door open. Down two, Princeton ran the clock down before getting a great look by Schroeder at a potential game-winner from beyond the arc. However, his shot was off the mark, and Princeton dropped its fifth straight.
Key performance McAndrew led Brown in scoring with 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting and in rebounding with 10 boards, playing 42 minutes in the overtime affair.
Key statistic Once again, the free throw line was not kind to the Tigers, who were just 8 of 13 (61.5 percent) there, while watching the Bears go 26 of 34 (76.5 percent) — a huge edge that made all the difference in a very tight contest.

Notes

– Four Brown starters finished in double figures, with Sullivan (15 points), Mullery (12 points), and Huffman (10 points) joining McAndrew.

– Savage was on fire from the outside, nailing seven three-pointers en route to a game- and career-high 35 points for Princeton, while Zach Finley added 12.

– The Bears got the better of the rebounding battle, hauling down 33.3 percent offensive while holding Princeton to just 20.0 percent at its end.

– Savage’s teammates were as cold as he was hot, with the rest of the Tigers combining to go just 2 of 18 from long range, with Koncz’s going 1-for-9 from three.

– Briggs got the surprise start in place of Gunn, who came off the bench to record seven assists and five turnovers in 35 minutes, while Briggs played just six minutes.

– After becoming the first team to sweep Penn and Princeton road trip since 1987, Brown heads back on the road this weekend when it visits the Big Apple to face Columbia on Friday, February 22, as the Tigers head north to face Harvard, with both contests set to get under way at 7:00 pm ET.
