Keys to the Game
Key sequence Zach Finley’s layup gave Princeton a 49-36 advantage with just under 12 minutes to play in the contest. However, Manhattan would hold the Tigers to just one field goal over a period nearly 10 minutes long, with the Jaspers outscoring their hosts 27-7 over this span. Turnovers would be a major problem for Princeton, with three consecutive miscues starting off the Manhattan run. The Tigers seemed to catch their breath, with three free throws expanding their lead back to seven points with over eight minutes remaining, but a three-point play by Antoine Pearson canceled out those points, and following another Princeton turnover, Darryl Crawford made it a one-possession game. A pair of one-for-two performances at the line by Marcus Schroeder and Noah Savage made it 54-50, only to see Pearson knock down a three. Kyle Koncz’s layup gave the Tigers a three-point advantage, before Nick Walsh’s three-pointer knotted the game at 56 all. Walsh then came up with a steal and got a conventional three-point play to give Manhattan its first lead of the second half. While Princeton misfired on three straight three-pointers, the Jaspers got buckets from Pearson and Crawford to build up a 63-56 lead with 2:20 to play.
Key sign it was over Lincon Gunn’s three-point play made it a four-point game with just over two minutes remaining, but Pearson got inside for a layup. Gunn answered with a lay-in of his own, Pearson sank a jumper at the other end, then Brandon Adams came up with a steal, drew a foul, and hit both free throws. Two Schroeder free throws made it a two-possession game at 69-63 with 20 ticks left, and the Tigers got the break they needed when Adams missed the front end of a one-and-one, but it took nearly 10 seconds for Princeton to get a look at the basket, as Gunn missed a three-pointer. The Jaspers controlled the rebound and Princeton was headed to an eighth-straight defeat.
Key performance Pearson was the game’s top scorere with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line. The Manhattan guard also had a nice floor game with five assists and just one turnover, while coming up with three steals and a pair of rebounds at the defensive end in 37 minutes.
Key statistic Turnovers played a major role in the outcome, as Princeton committed 21 while forcing 14. The disparity led to a 25-11 advantage for Manhattan in points off turnovers.
Notes

– Finley was key inside for Princeton early on, notching 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting and eight rebounds in 30 minutes, while Koncz broke out of a shooting slump with a 3-for-7 night from beyond the arc en route to 14 points.

– Rashad Green had an interesting line for Manhattan with 16 points, seven rebounds, and five steals, but also accounted for seven turnovers.

– Princeton’s 33 first-half points were three times the 11-point output in the first 20 minutes at Evansville and more than triple the 10 first-half points scored last time out at Penn State.

– The Tigers shot the three relatively well, knocking down 7 of 19 (36.8 percent) as a team.

– The Jaspers owned the interior, outscoring their hosts 50-30 in points in the paint.

– Princeton will try to put its losing streak behind it when the Tigers travel to West Virginia to take on Marshall on Saturday, December 22, at 5:00 pm ET.
