Keys to the Game
Key sequence Having just recovered from a 13-2 Lehigh run to build its lead back to six on an Evan Harris bucket with 10:53 remaining, Harvard surrendered 11 unanswered points. Marquis Hall capitalized on an offensive rebound to bring the Mountain Hawks within four, then Dave Buchberger sank a three-pointer to make it a one-point game. Two possessions later, Lehigh pulled ahead on a Hall jumper, then extended its lead it three on a pair of Bryan White free throws. After a shot clock violation by the Crimson, John Gourlay scored inside to cap off the 11-0 spurt that gave the hosts a 54-49 advantage with 6:23 to play.
Key sign it was over Trailing by eight, Harvard got a three-point play from Jeremy Lin to close within five with just over a minute left. However, Hall drew a foul from Lin, and hit both free throws to make it a 66-59 game. Lin came up empty on a three-point attempt, then Hall again was perfect at the line to extend the Lehigh margin to nine with 34 ticks on the clock. When Andrew Pusar’s jumper wouldn’t go down, Zahir Carrington finished off the Crimson with a pair of free throws that made it 70-59 with just 21 seconds to play.
Key performance Despite missing all five of his three-point attempts, Hall had a major impact on the game. The sophomore guard made 5 of 6 shots inside the arc to finish with a game-high 17 points, and also added five assists in 28 minutes.
Key statistic Lehigh was able to make up for a subpar shooting afternoon by beating Harvard at its own game and dominating the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks attempted 24 free throws to the Crimson’s nine, and outscored their guests 22-9 from the stripe.
