Keys to the Game
Key sequence After a relatively close first half, North Carolina jumped out to a 17-6 run to start the second half. Penn coach Glen Miller tried to stem the tide by calling timeout after a Deon Thompson baseline jumper made it 65-43, but the Tar Heels forced the Quakers into a five-second violation on the inbounds play. The ensuing possession resulted in a layup for Tyler Hansbrough.
Key sign it was over After two Tyler Bernardini free throws made the score 73-52 in North Carolina’s favor with 12:35 left, Penn only made two field goals over the next seven minutes of play. Both were layups by Bernardini. By the time Justin Reilly scored with 6:05 left, the Tar Heels’ lead was 35 points.
Key performance The preseason First Team All-America forward Hansbrough was simply unstoppable, scoring a game-high 29 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field in just 25 minutes. Hansbrough also pulled down 10 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.
Key statistic The Tar Heels took full advantage of their star front line, pounding the smaller Quakers on the glass. North Carolina had more offensive rebounds (20) than Penn had defensive rebounds (17). The hosts were held to 19.4-percent offensive rebounding and outscored 23-8 on second-chances.
Notes

– Bernardini had a standout night, drawing raves postgame from North Carolina coach Roy Williams for his 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Brian Grandieri added 17 for the Quakers

– In his Palestra homecoming, Wynnewood, PA, native Wayne Ellington had a relatively quiet night. He scored 13 points, but made only five of his 14 field goal attempts and missed both his three-point shots.

– Penn made no attempt to slow down the game, and the result was a back-and-forth affair, with 84 possessions per side.

– The Quakers had another cold night from beyond the arc, making only three of 19 attempts (15.8 percent), but no Penn player took more than three perimeter shots.

– Penn’s final total of 22 turnover, was only three more than North Carolina’s 19, but the Tar Heels had a 24-9 edge in points off turnovers.

– The Palestra was packed to the rafters with a sellout crowd of 8,722 that looked the part, but included a sizable amount of Carolina blue.

– The Quakers will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they travel to Monmouth on Saturday, December 8, for a 7:00 pm ET contest.
