Yes, it was Penn’s first Big 5 win of the season. And yes, it was over a decent La Salle team. And yes, it was Fran Dunphy’s 300th victory as a head coach. But the most important thing about last night was that the Quakers were able to win when Ibby Jaaber had his worst game of the season.
Zoller, Osmundson pick up the slack
With Jaaber missing all six attempts from three-point range and hitting just four of 14 shots on the night en route to a season-low 10 points, Penn needed to find offense elsewhere. As it turned out, it was Eric Osmundson and Mark Zoller who stepped up. Osmundson continued his hot shooting early on, scoring eight points in the first eight minutes to help stake Penn to a seven-point lead. The senior captain would finish with 17 points — one off his season high. Zoller scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the final 11:36, and outplayed his La Salle counterpart, 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year and future NBA draftee Steven Smith. Zoller did a lot of that damage from the arc, where he connected on a career-best four three-pointers.
