PF Howlett gives pledge to Penn

Glen Miller likely wrapped up his second recruiting class early with the Daily Pennsylvanian reporting the commitment of power forward Mike Howlett. The 6-9 native of Amesbury, MA, currently is doing a postgraduate year at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire after backing out of his commitment to Lehigh when Billy Taylor left for Ball State this past summer. He also received interest from Bucknell, Davidson, and Holy Cross, before narrowing his choices to Holy Cross and Penn. Howlett is the fourth member of Penn’s 2008 recruiting class and the only power forward in the group.

Slant: Lehigh’s loss is Penn’s gain here, as Howlett was widely regarded the centerpiece of the Mountain Hawks’ 2007 class before opting out when Taylor departed. The scouting report on Howlett is that he is a very mobile big man who can bang in the paint and handle the ball and shoot from the perimeter as well. He’s a very solid final addition to a Quaker recruiting class that features four projected impact players.
