Keys to the Game
Key sequence With the lead see-sawing back and forth in the final minutes, a wild sequence underneath the Yale basket ended with Matt Kyle getting a layup and foul to put the Bulldogs up one with 2:53 left. He couldn’t finish off the three-point play, and with the shot clock running low, Strittmatter found a cutting Gunn for a layup to put Princeton back in the lead. Yale reclaimed the lead on a Kyle hook from close range, but Marcus Schroeder hit a pair of free throws with 1:17 on the clock to swing the advantage back in the Tigers’ direction. At the other end, a Travis Pinick a layup swung the lead in Yale’s favor, and Kyle blocked Luke Owings twice from point-blank range, but another scrum ended with Schroeder hitting a big shot in the paint to restore the Princeton lead with 21.6 left. Pinick then drove to the hoop and Kyle Koncz swooped in for a great block, but Pinick grabbed the loose ball and flipped it in — while being fouled — with 10.1 seconds left in the contest for a 52-51 Bulldog advantage.
Key sign it was over Pinick missed his free throw attempt, however Kyle grabbed the offense rebound. The Yale center surprised everyone — including his coach — by immediately going back up for a shot instead of waiting to be fouled. His putback attempt missed, giving Princeton a chance to win. The Tigers rushed the ball downcourt, and Marcus Schroeder got off a running bank shot from about seven feet out on the left side. However, the shot was strong and caromed off the rim, as the Bulldogs held on for the win.
Key performance Pinick got the start and made some big plays down the stretch, finishing with 12 points — on 5-for-7 shooting — to go with four rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal in 27 minutes.
Key statistic The taller Bulldogs owned the paint, outscoring the Tigers 32-20 there.

– Princeton put together a 17-2 run in the first half to turn a seven-point deficit into an eight-point lead.

– Noah Savage came off the bench to score 15 points, as the Tiger bench outscored the Bulldog reserves 17-4.

– Princeton did surprisingly great on the offensive glass against the top defensive rebounding team in the nation, grabbing 13 of 31 (41.2 percent) of rebounds at its end and outscoring Yale 15-13 in second-chance points.

– The win gives the Bulldogs their first season of double-digit Ivy wins since 2001-02 and secures sole possession of second place in the league. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ last-place fate was sealed with the loss, even with a game remaining against Penn (21-8, 12-1 Ivy) on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 pm ET.
