Pettinella to transfer to Virginia

Josh Hirsch reports in The Daily Pennsylvanian sportswriters blog The Buzz that former Penn forward Ryan Pettinella will attend Virginia next year. Virginia will be Pettinella’s fourth stop in two years. He transferred from Penn in 2005 and has been attending Monroe Community College in New York near his hometown of Pittsford, after leaving Cincinnati when the school dismissed Bob Huggins.

Slant: Pettinella’s decision to enroll at a junior college should buy him an extra year of eligibility, as the NCAA waives the year-in-residency requirement for junior college transfers. He’ll have to fight for playing time next year, as the Cavaliers have both frontcourt starters and their top frontcourt reserve due back and their 2006 recruiting class features three 6-8 forwards. But even if it doesn’t work out for Pettinella basketball-wise, Virginia is much closer to the level of the Ivy League academically.
