Keys to the Game
Key sequence Columbia trimmed a double-digit deficit to just three on a three-pointer by Mack Montgomery at the 2:45 mark. Mark MacDonald couldn’t answer with a three at the other end, and the Lions got the rebound. However, Kevin Bulger turned it over, and Mark McAndrew hit two free throws to make it a two-possession game again. Montgomery’s layup made it 57-54 with 1:13 remaining, but this time MacDonald was able to answer in kind, adding a free throw for a three-point play and a six-point Brown lead. John Baumann’s dunk reduced the margin to four, but two McAndrew free throws canceled that out, restoring the Bears’ lead to six at 62-56 with 26 seconds left.
Key sign it was over Baumann gave Columbia life with a three-point play with 15 seconds on the clock, leaving the Lions trailing by just three. McAndrew only could get one of two free throws, but Brett Loscalzo missed the mark on a three-pointer, then committed a turnover after grabbing his own rebound with three seconds left. Joe Bova fouled MacDonald, who hit one of two at the stripe for the final margin.
Key performance Damon Huffman had a big night with 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting — hitting 6 of 12 from beyond the arc.
Key statistic Brown was able to hold off a big second half by Columbia because the Bears made good use of the free throw line. Brown was 20 of 23 (87.0 percent) from the stripe — including 16 of 19 in the second half. By comparison, Columbia was just 5 of 10 on free throws.
