January 15 Power Rankings

All eight teams have a league game under their belts now, and things don’t look too different from last week — aside from Princeton making a move to leave the Bottom Three. Right now there’s simply a big gap right now between the Top Three and the rest of the league.

1. Penn (8-5, 2-0 Ivy) 1 There was some concern after Penn’s vaunted defense fell apart in the second half of Monday’s game at Fordham, but that proved to be an anomaly. Wins over respectable Cornell and Columbia teams by a combined 72 points went way beyond serving notice.
2. Harvard (10-5, 2-0 Ivy) 2 Given what Penn and Yale did this weekend, the Crimson’s 12-point win over Dartmouth wasn’t that impressive. But considering the problems Harvard has had up in Hanover in recent years, Friday night’s result was a relative breeze for Frank Sullivan’s team.
3. Yale (9-7, 1-0 Ivy) 3 The Bulldogs improved to 6-3 since the return of Dominick Martin with a thrashing of Brown that wasn’t nearly as competitive as the final score indicated. In addition to getting the Brown monkey off its back, Yale won its Ivy opener for the first time since 2001-02.
4. Cornell (6-10, 1-1 Ivy) 4 The Big Red couldn’t handle the Penn defensive pressure on Friday, lost its composure, and got thoroughly embarrassed. But Steve Donahue was able to rally his team, resulting in a 57-49 win at Princeton for the program’s second straight win at Jadwin.
5. Columbia (7-8, 0-2 Ivy) 5 The Lions’ season is in danger of imploding after a disastrous weekend. Columbia’s defense was downright terrible in Friday’s overtime loss at Princeton, then the offense was completely overwhelmed by the Penn defense in Saturday’s blowout loss at The Palestra.
6. Princeton (3-11, 1-1 Ivy) 8 The Tigers broke their losing streak in a very unconventional way, going to the free throw line 34 times in the overtime win over Columbia. The extra session appeared to take a toll, however, as Princeton came out flat the next night and lost at home to Cornell.
7. Brown (4-10, 0-1 Ivy) 6 Getting Luke Ruscoe back from injury didn’t jumpstart the Bears’ moribund offense, though a 21-6 run over the final 5:02 of garbage time covered up another poor offensive performance. Glen Miller has to be losing his mind watching his team shoot this poorly.
8. Dartmouth (2-12, 0-2 Ivy) 7 The Big Green has taken a step back from a won-loss perspective in Terry Dunn’s second season at the helm, but the only real differences are slightly worse defense and fewer free throw attempts. Dartmouth desperately needs someone to step up as an inside presence.
