Princeton finally gets a chance to atone

The Tigers have had an awfully long time to think about their disastrous weekend in New York, thanks to an exam break lasting over two weeks. The bad news is that the opportunity to get that bad taste of their mouths will come against a high-major opponent, and Princeton hasn’t fared well against these teams in recent years. Adding injury to insult, Joe Scott may be without his best overall player.

These two New Jersey programs don’t like to play together, avoiding each other since their last meeting back in the 1988-89. Interestingly, Princeton will be the second Ivy school to face Seton Hall at the Meadowlands, with Penn dropping a 94-85 decision back on December 23. The Pirates are a young team that likes to get out and run, so the Tigers’ deliberate pace and matchup zone could frustrate the home team. However, Kyle Koncz isn’t listed as a probable starter due to a foot injury, and may miss the game entirely. Princeton will need to hit its threes to stay in this game, which is where Koncz would be missed greatly.

This is not an ideal matchup for Princeton, as Seton Hall allows relatively few three-point attempts (just 27.7 percent of field goal attempts) and opponents are shooting just 33.4 percent from outside the arc on the season. The Tigers have looked to create a lot of turnovers defensively, but the Pirates rank fourth out of 336 Division I teams in offensive turnover rate at just 16.3 percent. Bobby Gonzalez’s team has enjoyed a huge turnover differential on the season, as opponents are turning it over at a 24.9-percent clip, and Seton Hall ranks eighth in the nation in steals at 14.3 percent. Two encouraging signs, however, are the Pirates’ poor overall shooting (46.5 percent from two, 31.2 percent from three) and weak rebounding (31.9 percent offensively, 63.5 percent defensively).
Pomeroy says: Princeton 49, Seton Hall 59
