Keys to the Game
Key sequence Matt Mullery’s layup with 17:33 left in the game was the 12th unanswered point for Brown, cutting a 15-point deficit to just three. The Bears had two opportunities to tie or further cut into the Yale lead, but Marcus Becker and Mullery each missed a shot. Eventually, Eric Flato sank a three-pointer to end a 5:40 scoreless drought for the Bulldogs. After the two teams traded turnovers, Casey Hughes came up with a steal and finished off a fastbreak with a dunk. Caleb Holmes connected on a three-pointer the next trip down the floor, and Hughes capped off a 10-0 Yale run with a jumper at the 13:37 mark.
Key sign it was over A layup by Mullery and a Damon Huffman three-pointer trimmed the Yale lead to 12 with 1:19 remaining. However, the Bulldogs were able to run 30 seconds off the clock before Brown eventually fouled. Flato hit two free throws, and after missing a jumper, the Bears conceded defeat and opted not to foul.
Key performance Hughes registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. The senior wing shot 5 of 9 from the field and added two assists and four steals.
Key statistic Yale pounded Brown on the glass, claiming 33.3 percent of rebounds at its offensive end and holding Brown to just one out of a possible 26 offensive rebounds (3.8 percent). Consequently, the Bulldogs owned a massive 14-0 edge in second-chance points.
Notes

– Mark McAndrew had high-scoring honors with 18 points — the only Bear in double figures. The junior guard shot 5 of 8 from the floor and 3 of 5 from three-point range.

– Sam Kaplan came off the bench for the Bulldogs to score 10 points and grab five rebounds in 17 minutes.

– Yale opened the contest by scoring 12 of the first 14 points.

– Brown attempted just 11 free throws on the night, getting only seven points from the line.

– The Bulldogs shot much better from outside the arc, hitting 7 of 18 (38.9 percent), compared to just 5 of 19 (26.3 percent) for the Bears.

– Turnovers were even with 18 per side, but Yale had a 21-10 edge in points off turnovers.

– The Bulldog reserves outscored their Brown counterparts 27-8.

– The two teams will finish off their home-and-home series in New Haven on Saturday, January 20, at 3:00 pm ET.
