Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
After Elon had rallied to take a late lead, Ibby Jaaber drilled a three-pointer to put Penn back on top 59-58 with 2:16 left. LeVonn Jordan was fouled and hit both free throws to give the Phoenix the lead, but Jaaber found Mike Kach for the hoop and harm, and the junior guard converted the free throw for a conventional three-point play. Brian Waters misfired on a jumper, and Tommy McMahon dished to Brian Grandieri for a layup to put the Quakers up four with 40 ticks left.

Key sign it was over |
Trailing by four in the final minute, Jordan grabbed his own miss and laid it in to make it a two-point game. Elon fouled Tommy McMahon, who missed the first, but got the second free throw to push the Penn lead back to 65-62. Jordan again put back an offensive rebound to shave the Quaker lead to just one. McMahon was fouled again, and repeated his performance by missing the first and hitting the second. After a 30-second Penn timeout with 6.8 seconds left, Elon rushed the ball upcourt and settled for a less-than-ideal shot from the elbow by Jordan that bounced harmlessly off the rim and was corralled by Kevin Egee.

Key performance |
Steve Danley finished the afternoon with 11 points and eight rebounds — five at the offensive end. The Penn big man dished out a pair of assists to go with two steals and a block. He didn’t commit a turnover in 35 minute, and his 5-for-6 performance at the line made him the only Quaker over 50.0 percent from the stripe.

Key statistic |
Penn won the turnover battle 18-11 and made the most of Elon’s mistakes. The Quakers owned a massive 28-12 edge in points off turnovers.

– Jaaber led the Quakers with 14 points, though he was just 1 of 5 from three-point range.
– Penn had a rough day from outside the arc, hitting just 5 of 17 (29.4 percent). Conversely, Elon came into the game shooting just 30.1 percent from three on the season, but the Phoenix knocked down 8 of 17 (47.1 percent) attempts from long range.
– The Quakers succeeded in getting to the line much more (25 attempts) than their hosts (14 attempts), but Penn’s free throw shooting was an abysmal 52.0 percent.
– Egee got the start in place of McMahon and scored seven points in 19 minutes.
– Penn opens Ivy play when it travels to Cornell (6-7) on Friday, January 12 at 7:00 pm ET.
