Keys to the Game
Key sequence Mark McAndrew’s layup gave Brown a 47-44 lead with just over a minute left, but Vince Oliver answered quickly with a layup at the other end to make it a one-point game with 45 seconds left. Brown ran clock, but ran a little too much, as UC Davis forced a shotclock violation with nine ticks left, giving the Aggies a final chance at the win.
Key sign it was over Out of a 30-second timeout with nine seconds showing on the clock and Brown leading 47-46, Rommel Marentez took the ball down the court and dished to Vince Oliver for an open three-pointer in front of the home bench. Oliver got off the shot before the buzzer and it found the bottom of the net, giving the Aggies the upset win.
Key performance Oliver missed his first five attempts from three-point range, but was able to knock down a three when it mattered most. The UC Davis guard finished with a game-high 15 points points to go with five assists.
Key statistic Brown attempted 26 free throws to UC Davis’s 18, but the Bears shot just 46.2 percent from the line. As a result, the both teams finished the night with 12 points at the line.
Notes

– Chris Skrelja came off the bench to lead Brown in scoring with 12 points, adding seven rebounds. McAndrew was the only other Bear in double figures scoring-wise with 10 points.

– Neither team shot the three-pointer well, with Brown just 5 of 15 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc and UC Davis even worse at 3 of 19 (15.8 percent).

– Turnovers were major story, as Brown’s 19 turnovers limited the Bears to just 37 field goal attempts, while UC Davis committed only 10 turnovers. The Aggies owned a 18-7 edge in points off turnovers.

– The Bears’ leading scorer, Damon Huffman, did not attempt a shot in the first half and finished with just six points in 31 minutes.

– Brown was fortunate to be down just three at halftime after shooting just 5 of 17 (29.4 percent) and committing 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

– Marcus Becker had one of his more forgettable games, going 1-for-4 from the floor, committing five turnovers against three assists, and missing all three free throw attempts.

– The Bears’ cross-country roadtrip takes them back to the Lone Star State for a date with Matt Doherty’s SMU squad (9-3) on Saturday, January 6 at 8:00 pm ET.
