December 3 Power Rankings

After a week full of close games and exciting finishes for Ivy teams, it was entirely fitting that they compiled a 9-8 record. Now after just 22 home dates in 57 total games to this point, the league gets to enjoy the creature comforts of home, as 15 of the next 27 games will take place in Ivy League venues.

1. Penn (4-3) 1 Penn’s four-game winning streak came to an end with a Saturday’s wild 99-89 home loss to Villanova. While the Quaker defensive effort definitely was lacking, they aren’t going to face many other teams this year with that kind of offensive firepower, size, and athleticism.
2. Princeton (5-2) 2 Saturday’s win in the consolation game of the Marquette tourney was doubly big for the Tigers, as it was over a quality opponent and it completed the seven-game season-opening road trip on a high note. We’ll find out this week just how seriously Justin Conway is injured.
3. Columbia (5-3) 3 The second half of the Providence game was disheartening, but the Lions bounced back nicely with a win in the annual thriller against Sacred Heart. The freshmen guards are showing promise, and Niko Scott may not be the only first-year in the starting lineup when Ivy play rolls around.
4. Harvard (4-3) 5 The Crimson has won three straight — including the last two on the road. While Brian Cusworth’s impressive start certainly is eye-catching, it’s the contributions from guys like Jeremy Lin, Andrew Pusar, Brad Unger, and James Lambert that are making the difference.
5. Brown (3-5) 7 What a difference a week makes for the Bears, who lost their best player, but got two key players back from injury. Suddenly Brown finds itself with a two-game winning streak and can capture bragging rights in the Ocean State with a win at Rhode Island on Tuesday.
Cornell (4-4) 3 Since pulling out a close win at Northwestern in the opener, the Big Red’s inexperience has shown up in the narrow losses to Binghamton, Hartford, and William & Mary. The pair of late double-digit leads squandered this week can’t be sitting well with Steve Donahue.
7. Yale (1-5) 6 The first four losses weren’t causes for concern as individual results, as each of them came in a game Yale wasn’t expected to win. But the Bulldogs’ inability to snag a win in any of those contests now looks much worse after a very poor road loss at Wagner this weekend.
8. Dartmouth (0-6) 8 You have to feel for the Big Green, decimated by injuries and forced to play some tough road games without key personnel, as was the case earlier this week at Kansas. Hopefully Terry Dunn regains the services of some of those players over the exam break.
